Fieldwork with camera and notebook in West Bengal The title of this paper raises many questions and tells several stories. Do ethnographers know anything? Is there a Bengali culture? What is knowledge? As Wittgenstein has said, with a word comes a whole mythology. We may add an anthropology, a science, an interpretation, an analysis. In attempting to answer some of these questions I shall discuss concepts and problems occasioned by the anthropological work I started in West Bengal in 1967 and continued, on and off, ever since.
