Vodka in the culture of the Khanti of Vasyugan This paper examines the relationship of the Khanti of Vasyugan to alcohol. The consumption of alcohol constitutes a nodal point in the culture of this Khanti group. On the one hand, alcohol plays an important economic role, and on the other it has a significant impact on Khanti customs which it regulates and through which its consumption is regulated. The inevitable presence of alcohol does not merely have moral implications but also influences people's lifestyles and life histories. The time spent in consuming alcohol takes up a great part of people's lives, but talking about it is also a very important part of everyday communication and plays a role in articulating Khanti identity. This study primarily concentrates on the present, but also considers recent transformations in Khanti society.
