ZSÓFIA FRAZON The devil pact as truth of the criminal procedure and the mechanisms of its construction The paper discusses the model that Praxis Criminalis - the most influential manuál on witch-hunt - offered for early modern courts for investigating cases of maleficium. The present study focuses on the role and function of torture within the System of constructing and justifying truth. Emphasis is put on the role of the manuál (Praxis Criminalis) in terms of investigation patterns and on the autonomy it left to the court. The paper deals with the factors that influenced the court in deciding to follow or to depart from the manuál and it constructs one possibte way the Institution of torture proceeded along the instructions of Praxis Criminalis.
