Papers on popular literature This article aims to describe the territory between the use of writing and spoken expression through the review of three books that deals with the role of popular literature in peasant society. It reminds us that the relationship between literacy and illiteracy in the last centuries can only be characterised as substantial and complex. Literacy is a relatively new phenomenon in popular culture, therefore it needs new research methods. Popular literature shares a great number of features with verbal folklore but it also has constraints originating from writing. This duality can be detected in the reception of popular literary works. The paper analyses this aspect with the help of comparisons between abstract and concrete expressions, linearity and visualisation, and referential and poetical functions.
