The small town of Sümeg used to he an important center for pottery in the region north of the Lake Balaton, where more than 50 workshops supplied the needs of the surrounding four counties. Today but one old potter is working, András Varga, the main informer of the author. On basis of a document from the year 1335 which mentions the clay-pits used up to the present, József Németh proves that the craft of this town - which had a mighty fortress and was also an episcopal residence - goes back to the HVth century. After the historical introduction the author gives a description of the clays,both the fire-clay used for pots and the more fusible clay used for dishes, the plan and arrangement of the workshops, the kilns (rectangular up-draft kilns were used in Sümeg), the tools as well as the various kinds of vessels made and the decoration of each kind. Talking of the decoration a small wooden tool for fluting may be mentioned used to engrave grooves in the walls of pots and also to decorate plates, dishes and lids.
