H. Kolba Judit szerk.: Historical Exhibition of the Hungarian National Museum Guide 2 - From the Foundation of the State until the Expulsion of the Ottomans - The history of Hungary in the 11th to 17th centuries (Budapest, 2005)
The first unit of the exhibition displays the history of Hungary from the foundation of the state until the 17th century. After the Conquest, the principal task of the newcomers was the foundation and organization of the Kingdom of Hungary. The adoption of Christianity secured the place of the country among the new states of Christian Europe in the making. The Hungarians adopted the values of Western civilization, amalgamating them with their own traditions, which were Oriental in origin. The history of the Kingdom of Hungary, first flourishing then falling into pieces between the 11th century and the 17th century, is displayed in the exhibition primarily through the medium of its material remains. Among these, many outstanding works of art born in unity with the spiritual and artistic trends of the Europe of the period can be admired. A whole host of objects give visual expression to the shaping of life among the poorer and richer social strata in the course of the centuries. We should like to invite our honoured guests to become more closely acquainted with this rich past.
