No. Gr.W.3918 MNW Book Illustration KB: The 1920s was the heyday of etching in Hungary, but towards the end of the decade it gave way to the woodcut. The ascendancy of the technique of relief printing suitable for multiplication in the press was in connection with an upswing in book art. The authors of new applied arts programmes stressed the importance of high-quality books; overcoming the despair felt over the enormous war loss, they urged for active moves to improve Hungarian culture. The output of applied arts closely interlocked with the economy - which had to be outstanding by international standards yet specifically Hungarian - was regarded as proof of the nation's vitality and a basic guarantee for its survival among the rest of the nations. Under the aegis of this conception, new publishing houses joined the earlier centres of book publication such as the small rural family ventures Kner and Tevan. Among them, Amicus was the most important publisher for book art. Its director László Reiter was a graphic artist who acted as organizer as well, being a member of professional associations e.g. the Hungarian Bibliophile Society founded in 1921.
