The Lutheran branch of the Reformation spread beyond the German-speaking inhabitants of Hungary to Magyars and Slovaks, and was also present in Transylvania and Upper Hungary, mainly among the Saxons, in the 17 th century. In the medieval churches inherited from the Catholic past, the winged altars were preserved (e.g. in Lőcse [Levoca], Bártfa [Bardejov] and Kassa [Kosice]), but were kept closed. They also continued to use the old robes and plate. Late Gothic chalices still survive in some Evangelical churches (e.g. in Celldömölk and Csönge in Transdanubia), but there were also Baroque works, as in Sopron, where Augsburg plate was presented as a gift in the late 17th century (Ádám Gálffy). They also made use of reproduction graphics; the carved decorations of two communionjugs include images taken from engravings. One of these was ordered by Stefan Pilarik, the minister of Selmecbánya [Banská Stiavnica] Church in 1685; the precursors of their decoration were illustrations in the Kurfürstenbibel (Nuremberg, 1641 [1643]). A work of unique importance in the history of art in Hungary is the concordance of Péter Perényi (1502-1548). The infamous keeper of the crown, in captivity in Vienna, put into verse the parallel parts of the Old and New Testaments, and engaged Augustin Hirschvogel (1503—1553) to make the engravings. (Hirschvogel finished the book after Perényi's death and published it in 1550.) V-l Chalice c. 1500 (?)
