ART AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH With the Ottoman advance and the spread of the Reformation, the medieval Catholic church loyal to Rome held sway in an ever-shrinking part of the country and was in a minority by the end of the 16 th century. The trend reversed after the Council of Trent, which started off the Counter-Reformation, and through the powerful intervention of the Habsburg kings and the Jesuits, a substantial re-Catholicisation took place in the western part of the Kingdom of Hungary, and later spread to the east.
