ILLUSTRATED HUNGARIAN HISTORY The writing of Hungarian history and the publication of an illustrated edition of what was written remained serious problems throughout the 16th century. The Chronicle of János Thuróczy, published for King Matthias in 1488, was the only late medieval Hungarian history which was published with likenesses of Hungarian kings and busy scenes with many figures. Several books on the history of Hungary came out during the 16th century, but were only rarely illustrated. The most important is the German-language edition of Antonio Bonfini's great work (Rerum Ungaricarum decades, which covers the whole of Hungarian history) published in Basle in 1545, accompanied by a variety of woodcut compositions. Gáspár Heltai's Hungarian-language Bonfini adaptation bore only a picture of King Matthias (Kolozsvár [Cluj] 1575). Another illustrated Hungarian history appeared in the early 17' 1 ' century written by the court historian Elias Berger, at the initiative of the royal secretary Lőrinc Ferenczffy (1577-1640). The narrative illustrations - mostly battle scenes — are by Isaac Maior ; the portraits of kings are by another artist who worked for the royal court. (The latter were used by Ferenc Nádasdy, Chief Justice, as the basis for the Mausoleum in 1664, thereby establishing the definitive representations of Hungarian kings for a long period.) Most of the battle scenes remained unpublished until the 20 th century; the copper plates have been preserved. 11-31 Chronicle of János Thuróczy Johannes Thuróczy: Chronica Hungarorum Brno, [Konrad Stahel and Matthias Preinlein], 1488.
