HUMANISTS IN POZSONY (BRATISLAVA), MID- AND LATE 16™ CENTURY In the second half of the 16' 1 ' century, the new capital city of Pozsony (Bratislava) with the new ecclesiastical centre of Nagyszombat (Trnava) nearby, and the royal seat of Vienna, were the venues of lively a intellectual circle. It comprised prelates (Miklós Oláh, János Listhius, Antal Verancsics, Zakariás Mossóczy, István Radéczy), scholars holding high office in the Vienna court (János Zsámboky, Miklós Istvánffy), aristocrats (Boldizsár Batthyány) and scholars without noble rank (Georg Purkircher). Some foreign humanists also found this area conducive to their work (Carolus Clusius). The Flemish philologist Nicasius Ellebodius, who was living in Pozsony at the time, wrote, "If God grants peace to this country, it will be the most suitable place for putting scholarly plans into effect." They regularly met in the house of István Radéczy, Bishop of Eger and Governor of the Kingdom, and his garden with the famous linden tree sung of by Miklós Istvánffy, a place which was, for them, an Arcadian grove, the home of the Muses. Several of them (and of Emperor) had their portraits painted by Martino Rota, who came to the court at the suggestion of Antal Verancsics.
