Török Gyöngyi: Gothic Panel Paintings and Wood Carvings in Hungary, Permanent exhibition of the Hungarian National Gallery (A Magyar Nemzeti Galéria kiadványai 2005/3)
Ground-floor - Rooms 1-5
The fifth, and last room on the ground-floor highlights two altar wings from Szepeshely painted around 1480-90. These works provide a glimpse of the high level of artistic creation in the ecclesiastical centre of the Szepes region. The scenes on the wings are the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi and the Presentation in the 'temple. The shading of the figures suggesting sculptural hardness, and the bluishdark nocturnal scenery in the background of the Nativity reveal a talented painter who worked in the same circle as the outstanding painter of the Coronation of the Virgin altarpiece in Szepeshely (1499). 20.
