PRESUMED PORTRAIT OF SOPHIE DOROTHEA, DUCHESS OF CELLE, "PRINZESSIN VON AHLDEN" (1666-1726) Daughter of George William, duke of Lüneburg and, from 1665, of Celle (1624-1705), and Eleonore Desmier d'Olbreuse (1639-1722). In 1682 she married her cou­sin, George Louis (1660-1727), who later became the elector of Hanover, and from 1714 King George I of England. Her husband divorced her and banished her to the castle of Ahlden near Aller for having a liaison with Count Philipp Christoph von Königsmarck. She and George Louis had two children: George Augustus, later George II of England, and Sophie Dorothea, wife of Frederick William I, King of Prussia. In 1688 he be­came Frederick III, the Elector of Brandenburg. In 1701 he was crowned King Frederick I of Prussia. He was a generous patron of the arts and architecture. His major constructions (Stadtschloß, Zeughaus, Schloß Char­lottenburg) turned Berlin into a major Baroque resi­dential centre during his reign.
