The physi­cian József Lenhossék, who was portrayed by József Czauczig, noticed the talent for morphology and affinity for anatomical dissection in the young man, and admitted him to the Institute of Anatomy. 5 After his studies abroad, he began to lecture in embryology from 1875, and then, following the death of Lenhossék in 1888. he became the director of the Institute of Anatomy, and later published several books in the field. His ca­reer remained unbroken, becoming the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 1895, and was the Rector of the University from 1898 until his death. He was awarded several professional and academic prizes, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him as a corresponding member in 1879, and a full one in 1886. The Mihálkovics family portrait gallery was bought by the National Gallery between 2004 and 2006, and thus a valu­able and unique group of works have come to enrich its 19 th­century collection.
