STUDIES - Shinji Tanaka: On Bertalan Székely's Japanese Woman, 1871

MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.30. Copy based on scenes in vols. 2 and 3 (1815) of the Hokusai Manga. From vol. 2 Székely copied two landscapes, from vol. 3 an ancient military fan (Gunbai Uchiwa), a stand, and an interlocking tortoise shell pattern (kikkó, bishamon-kikko). MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.31. Japanese pattern. The design is presumably made up of a warbler in a plum tree, and a bird in a spruce. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.31/v. A kettle, not Japanese-looking. Notation: 'schlänge metallperlen in das weiche Ton eindrücken'. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.32. A Chinese-looking female figure. Notation of the colours of the garment: 'rot - grün - rosa — rot - gelblicht — graublau . MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.33. A pattern and a bird (stork?). MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.33/v. Japanese woman's garment with a pattern of bamboo leaves. Székely noted the colours of the garment on the edge: 1 roter fond mit silber räder als deßin [...]- braun violett fond nach unten zu licht - gold pflantze als deßin — schwarzer rand '. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.34. Japanese woman in her clothes. Notation of the colours of the garment: 'braunrot nachunten zu licht —gürtel violett mit gold - Umschlag weiß mit silber '. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.34/v. Japanese cloth patterns. Notation: 'schwarzer fond —grün und gold - bluten weis - blatter viole f. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.32/v. Another Chinese-looking female figure and a bird. Here again, notation of the colours of the garment: 'violet violet - rot - grün - violet - gelb - weiß'. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.35. Japanese female figure, comparable to Umegawa Chubei (1857) by woodblock artist Utagawa Yoshitora (active ca. 1850-80)." The colours of the garments are also fairly similar. A print of this work, purchased by Péter Vay (1864-1948) in Japan in 1907, is in the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts. 54 The date of purchase rules out the possibility of Székely's having used it as the basis for his copy. Notation: 'rot mit weisse ringe schwarz mit weissen blüthen '. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.35/v. Japanese female figure and a pair of Japanese raised wooden clogs (Geta). Copy based on Utagawa Kunisada's (1786-1814) 'Edo Meisho Asakusa Kakoware-fu'. 55 Notation: 'violett reihe — holzfarben'. MTAKK Ms.939/1. fol.36. Various patterns. Notation: 'licht fleischfarben fond drauf
