Museum quality books in the Archive Collection of the Museum and Library of Hungarian Agriculture

The library collections of the Museum and Library of Hungarian Agriculture contain over 5,000 items of museum quality. These are mostly books, but also include periodicals and other printed matter. The essay presents the pre-1851 publications found in the Archive Collection of the Agricultural Library. This section of the collection include 380 titles in 557 volumes. The essay gives an overview of the collection's contents by language and date, followed by a discussion of the material according to scientific fields, and within those, subjects and genres. After the general survey a more detailed description follows of some items of exceptional value, either from the viewpoint of historical scholarship or historical bibliography, or volumes so far largely ignored by research. In order to illustrate the versatility and scientific value of the collection, expert works on botany, viticulture and practical farming textbooks, in Hungarian or in other languages, from the 16th, 18th and 19th centuries, are presented. The essay conludes with a review of the already executed and forthcoming tasks related to the material of the Archive Collection.
