A Taste of Europe. An unusual exhibition and related events in the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture MÁRTA CSÓK Early this year a new temporary exhibition entitled A Taste of Europe’ opened in the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture. The exhibition, which was realised with the cooperation of nine European countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Italy, Scotland, Estonia, Portugal and Hungary) presented those agricultural products, foodways and culinary traditions that the involved countries regarded as typical or definitive of their culture. Hungary, as the home of ‘flinty’ wheat, selected this justifiedly world-renown product. The exhibitions opened in the nine countries simultaneously, on the same day and the same hour. Visitors to the Hungarian version of the exhibition were able to learn a lot about the history of crop production with the aid of archive film footage and photographs, and at the same time the most recent, commercially available cereal products were also on show. As an addition to the exhibition, educational workshops were created by museum specialists for several age groups, and other events were held to expand and diversify our regular weekend programmes for families. These were received very favourably by our visitors. The author of this paper, herself a museum education officer, reports on the exhibition as well as the goals and successes of related programmes and events. 258
