Forest management in the lower Danubian flood plains: Pancsova és Újvidék SÁNDOR OROSZI It is extremely important from the viewpoint of forestry science to determine when and where the development of the goals and methods of farming in riparian forests (still playing an important role in present-day Hungary) started. Traces lead to the lower section of the Danube flood plains that now belong to Serbia. The two towns discussed, Pancsova (Pancevo, Pantschowa) and Újvidék (Novi Sad, Neusatz), attempted in the late 19th century to establish forests on the Danubian flood plains. The towns started to plant trees after different preliminaries and with only partly similar methods, but reached similar results: the once natural oak or willow-andpoplar gallery forests could not be re-established. This was caused partly by the altered water courses as the result of water regulations, and partly by the inability of contemporary science to realise the enormous potentials of riverside alluvial soils, that could not be put to use by forestry methods. To this end, the introduction of recent summer clones suitable for intensive farming would have been needed, but until then only the first steps were taken towards the selection of new breeds. The observations of local forestry experts (some of which were published in specialist papers) had not been lost as the occasional failures also helped forestry to find the right path. The disclosure of the results of forestry efforts in that particular region will also serve as a colourful contribution to the local history of the towns in question, with special regard to the Dualist Period. 70 Erzsébet királyné emlékfái.
