TAKÁCS ISTVÁN: Cumanian animal keeping at Szentkirály, a 15th-16th century site in Central Hungary

CUMANIAN ANIMAL KEEPING AT SZENTKIRÁLY, A 15TH16TH CENTURY SITE IN CENTRAL HUNGARY István Takács 1. Introduction Systematic archaeological excavations at the 16th century Cumanian settlement of Szentkirály (Bács-Kiskun county, Central Hungary) have been carried out since 1971 by A. PÁLÓCZI HORVÁTH of the Hungarian Agricultural Museum, Budapest. The habitations, economic areas and wells uncovered during these excavations contained quantities of various zoological finds. 2. Faunal analysis The analysis of this large faunal assemblage is still in progress. The evaluation of material from House 4-4/a has been completed to date 1 . This feature complex is located north of the Medieval crossroads in the center of the main (N°3) excavated area (Figures 1 and 2). Its length exceeded 25 m, while the breadth varied between 5.1 and 5.3 m. This feature contained animal bones from the late 14th and 15th centuries. As is shown in Table 1, with the exception of one wild goose bone, its contents are composed of remains that all originate from domestic animals. Figure 1. The location of Houses 4-4/a in relation to the reconstructed Medieval crossroads and other excavated features on the site map of Szentkirály (outlines mark unexcavated features.)
