the 16th century (1546, 1559, 1562). At this time about 300-400 inhabitants were living here, they grew wheat, rye, flax, hemp, honey, bred sheep, pig and payed taxes after them. Villages became deserted under the Turkish rule during the last years of the 16th century. At this time Szentkirály was deserted too, but it was resettled during the 17th century. In 1692 its people moved to Kecskemét. Before starting the excavation both the ground-plan of the medieval village and the medieval church were recorded. The medieval church used to stand on the place of the Calvinist church. During the excavtion 38 buildings were unearthed and 394 graves were revealed around the church in the medieval cemetery till 1988. The main street of the settlement was found (NW-SE direction) with houses on both sides. Two tofts were excavated in the centre of the medieval village east and south of the church. One of the tofts was found on the NE side of the medieval street. The dwelling houses (house 4 and 4a) were parallel to the street, their entrances were at the SW direction. The former was house 4a (15th century) with four rooms (room, kitchen, pantry, pantry), length: 26,6 m, vidth: 5,1-5,3 m. A tile stove heated from outside and a round over in the kitchen were found. House 4 was erected above the debris of house 4a. It had also four rooms with a 33 m long porch. The measure of this house was 21,7x63 mHouses of similar structure were excavated on the Great Hungarian Plain at Turkeve-Móric, Baracs, Mizse etc. Beside and behind the dwelling house other buildings were excavated too: a small rectangular stable (5,2x3,8 m), and an oval semi-subterranean gabled roof building (5,6x4 m) - a pen for pigs. There were narrow ditches of fences behind the house on a territory of 20x30 m, - pen-like buildings for sheep. The toft of houses 4 and 4a reflects an interesting economic structure: when extensive farming has existed yet, but a great part of animals was kept inside the village. It seems that the nomadic Cumanians settled down at Szentkirály preserved a lot of traditional elements in their economy for a long time.
