Országos Levéltár MILLS DRIVEN BY LIVING POWER IN CARPATHIAN BASIN IN 18-19TH CC. II. Treadmills Mills driven by living power in Carpathian Basin could be found as long as the first quarter of the 20th century. Although decreasing in number they represented that type of traditional mills the driving of which was independent from the weather conditions, even for some decades after the invention and spreading of mills driven by machines. Hungarian literature dealing with mills did not examine these types thoroughly, did not determine their characteristics. Instead of telling the differences between treadmills and oblique treadmills sometimes their names were mixed although they were driven differently. In previous essays history of development of oblique treadmill has been examined, then the exact characteristics of this structure has been given by describing an oblique treadmill, the main parts of which survived. We want to continue describing the types by examining another, somewhat in the Carpathian Basin less important type of mills, a treadmill the plan of which was found in the archive. Lajos KISS described this treadmill on basis of talking with people living in Hódmezővásárhely and showed its plan in a drawing with scale. Using of treadmills was not rare in the Southern part of the Great Hungarian Plain, KISS mentioned several ones even from Hódmezővásárhely. They were also used as part of water-lifting system of wells (e.g. in Munkács castle, in SU, or in Nagy Somlyó vineyard). The mill of which the plan is to be found in the National Archives used to work in Kapuvár in the middle of 19th century. This plan is the only exact drawing of a treadmill. (The drawing from Hódmezővásárhely is a reconstructed one.) The list on its back - later crossed out but still legible - is about the structural part of the treadmill. a) Trettrad b) Kammrad und Drehung für Wasserdruck Maschine c) , d), e), f) Riemen räder g) 2 Eisene Walzen zum Maitz h) 2 holzene Walzen zum Erdapfel quetschen
