Hidvégi János: Egy hatszáz éves jármű rekonstrukciója - Giovanni la Fontana kötélhajtású kocsija
János Hídvégi RECONSTRUCTION OF A 600 YEAR OLD VEHICLE: THE ROPE DRIVEN CAR OF GIOVANNI LA FONTANA The history of the automobile can be traced back to much more ancient times than the appearance of cars. As early as during the Renaissance several inventors tried to construct vehicles devoid of animal tractive power. For the lack of other pulling forces they used human muscular power for moving the vehicles. Giovanni la Fontana sketched, in 1420, the first vehicle drawn by human force and a machinery (with a rope drive and a cog-wheel transmission). In 2008, the Renaissance memorial year, the Transport Museum reconstructed the vehicle on the basis of the drawing. Today we do not know if the vehicle has been built in reality. The reconstruction, however, proved the wisdom of the idea. In the exhibition the vehicle could be tried by the visitors. 119
