entific Co-Workers (SSCW), Scientific Co-Workers (SCW), Junior Scientific Co-Workers (JSW). In the given academic year Budapest Technical University did not have any female Professors. 41 Beside the university hierarchy there was another scientific hierarchy in Hungary introduced in 1952 and partly valid till today: according to the Soviet model scientific degrees could be awarded solely by the Academy (till the late 60s, when universities re-acquired the right of having doctoral programs.) This hierarchy consisted of ordinary members of the Academy of Sciences, corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences, "doctors of sciences" (D.Sc.) and "candidates of sciences" (C.Sc). The (corresponding) members of the Academy were elected from among the "doctors of sciences". Obtaining the "candidate" degree required, in general, passing of some exams and submitting and defending of a thesis. The "doctor of sciences" degree could be obtained, in general, by scientists already in possession of the "candidate" degree, after submitting and defending a thesis. The preconditions for obtaining either degree were some previous merits in the field of science (books, papers, presentations, sometimes outstanding inventions.) Those possessing the "candidate" degree could obtain the university doctor's degree without submitting any thesis or passing any exams, they just had to apply for it. 42 Szabadváry, Ferenc: Éva Bányai.
