J. M. Österreicher tried to produce Glauber's salt from medicinal water, and later he founded a soda factory. He died in Vienna as a man of importance and property (3). In 1930, at the wish of his father, István Örkény started his university studies in chemical engineering. However, after failing a physical chemistry examination in the second year, he temporarily gave up these studies and became a pharmacy student. He graduated in pharmacy in 1937. Later, he resumed his chemical engineering studies and was awarded his diploma in engineering in 1941. In this eleven-year period, besides receiving two diplomas, he had to do military service as a pharmacist in a medical unit, he spent two years abroad and started his career as a writer.
