ISTVÁN TRINGLI: CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE IN THE PERIOD OF THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN DUAL MONARCHY Systematic geological survey extended to the area of the whole country was started by the Geologische Reichsanstalt in Vienna, established in 1849. It continued these activities till 1868. After the Compromise, the Hungarian government — similarly to other institutions — created an independent organization. In July 1868 the Geological Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce was established, and after a year it was reorganized into the first Hungarian state research institute, the Hungarian Royal Geological Institute. The tasks of the institute were — a detailed geological survey of the lands of the Hungarian Crown and making public of its results; — elaboration of detailed geological maps; — establishment of a rock and fossil collection; — soil, mineral and rock analyses for agricultural, mining and industrial purposes. The specialization of the individual geologist to certain topics started from the 'eighties on. The post of mine geologist was created in 1883, and a pedological department was established in 1891. After the reorganization of the ministries, the institute was subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture. Work carried out in the institute was reported in independent volumes and journals edited by the institute, which also regularly published year-books. The institute was the organizer of the first international agrogeological congress held in Budapest in 1909 and also represented Hungarian geologists at other international congresses. The institute moved into its present building on Stefánia út (today Népstadion út) designed by Ödön Lechner in 1899.
