GYULA BATÁRI: THE FIRST NOTEWORTHY ATTEMPT IN HUNGARY FOR REGULAR ABSTRACTING OF INDUSTRIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL LITERATURE (1836/37) The journal „Ismertető" was founded in Pest in July 1836 by the jurist Márton Borsos (1796—1876) with the objective to abstract the contents of foreign industrial and technological journals in Hungarian. Most of the journals abstracted were German, followed in number by French and English journals. From time papers from Hungarian journals were also published. Besides abstracts, industrial and agricultural reports written by Hungarian correspondents from all over the country appeared in the journal. The profile of the abstracted papers was such to be of interest not only to experts, but to a wider public, above all papers related to agriculture. Topics of recurring interest were those connected with bridge construction, railways, steam power etc., by reason of their timeliness, since these were the days of planning the bridge to connect Pest with Buda and of planning railway lines. In some cases the original illustrations and figures were also published with the abstracts. Since at that time, an independent technological abstracting journal was unable to be self-supporting, due to the relatively narrow circle of readers, the editor decided to stop regular abstracting from July 1837 on. Instead, he published articles contributed by excellent specialists, mainly on economic, agricultural and commercial topics; however, he continued to give room to industrial-technological news. After the profile change ,the number of subscribers increased substantially, so that the journal rurned into a profitable enterprise and contiuned to appear, with the participation of various co-editors, till December 1841.
