KLÁRA DÖKA: CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF POWER-SUPPLY. PROBLEMS OF THE WATER-POWER IN 1919. The power demand of our country was 2619 million KWh annually in 1919. Because of the bad economics situation, problems of transportation, lack of coal, power works could only supply 457 million KWh. In 1919. there was electric light in 364 communities in Hungary. To replace power production on thermical way other resouces had to be found. By the turn of the centuries river regulation were practically completed in Hungary and through technical development the use of water energy for power production became possible. The use of water energy in Hungary can be traced back to very ancient origins. Already in the Middle Ages mills were built on rapidly folwing creeks and from the end of the 19 th century Water-power stations were built. In 1919 there were 96 water-power stations in our country and there were several plans to open new stations. The organisation of energy supply was the task of the Department of Water Economy of the Agricultural Commissariat and of the Commissariat of Social Production during the period of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919. As part of the national electrification project a large scale conception was elaborated for the utilasation of water power in Hungary. The plans of 35 water-power stations were elaborated (each of them with a production bigger than 1 million KWh which tougether would have produced more than the double of the energy needs of the country. Besides the utilisation of mountain creeeks and smaller rivers the use of the Danube was aimed at. The main power stations planed were at the Moson Danubearm, at Somorja, at Békásmegyer, at Csepel, at Tass and in the Iron Gates.
