ISTVÁN PÉNZES: THE STORY OF WHEAT WASHING IN HUNGARY Washing of wheat is one of the most ancient cleaning methodes. It did not only clean the surface of the grain sufficiently but helped to clear away not edible material from the corn. Hungarians are supposed to have known and used washing very early. This and other ways of corn cleaning speak of the dietary culture of our nation. It is of special interest that among other one time presentations, the work of Verancsics, captain of Veszprém and later bishop of Csanád deals with wheat washing too. Wheat washing by machines is centuries old as well. Documents which came down to us bear wittness to the fact that our leading millingmachine fectories did not lose sight of the importance of wheat washing machines. An outstanding example of wheat washing machines developed in Hungary is the combined „Reform" machine of the Wörner factory in 1913. To prove their priority against foreign factories is a duty of our history of technology. The wheat washing machine of Dr. Béla Szőke is a most valuable eqiupment of the Hungarian milling maching park.
