Richter's contemporaries also knew how to perform analyses and soon found out that there is something going wrong. It was Dalton, and even more so Berzelius, who, taking up the good ideas, and combining them with correct experimental results, actually created stoichiometric calculation. In my short lecture, I discussed four characteristic cases of measuring and evaluation to illustrate how, by dialectically connecting them, a science progresses, sometimes along a straight path, and sometimes with twists and turns, towards deeper recognition of Nature.
