TANULMÁNYOK - Jankó Béla: A gőzhajózás kezdetei hazánkban

With this vessel Bernhard's inventions included (a) controlled blade paddle wheel, (6) tube system boiler for steam generation, (c) reciprocating steam engine, (d) steam winch, and (e) automatic water supply for the boiler. Bernhard conducted towing trials with his vessel but realized that, owing to its insufficient output, the boat could not meet the requirements expected. Thus he designed a 200 HP four-wheel steamer whose wheels would have been driven by 2 horizontal cylinder type reciprocating steam engines, with 100 HP each. The hull was constructed, production of the mechanical equipment was under progress, but the work was never finished because of financial reasons, and Bernhard's inventions have been forgotten. The subsequent steamers employed oscillating engines. The very first boat equipped with an oscillating engine appeared on the Danube in 1841. Constructions corresponding to the forgotten inventions have been introduced only after several decades, and their invention was attributed to others.
