Kaján Imre: Mérnöki irányzatok a reformkorban 70

The demand of the protection against the floods endangering the grain-growing areas has propagated quickly in addition to the development of waterways in Hungary. The way leading toward the realization of the two intentions have met at the end ofthat era in the plans of the regulation of the river Tisza elaborated by Pál Vásárhelyi and his co-wokers. The different levels of the Hungarian specialist training have played a role in it and the late recognition of the interests as well. A characteristic figure of this era was the engineer József Beszédes, who made an excellent work in the regulation of the smaller rivers ( Sárviz-Kapos-Sió, the three Körös rivers) and who has insisted on the navigation path connecting Kolozsvár with Graz in Autstria. He insisted in the water regulation principles on the interventions, which have remained within the water life or within the natural world(!). Alter surveying hydrologically the Hungarian rivers an engineering method have been formed considering only the economic interests, the basis of wich was the very precise mathematical, cartographical and hydraulic knowledge. The result of this knowledge formed the basis for the great river ragulation works of the second half of the nineteenth century. Several thousands of maps were elaborated under the leadership of Mátyás Huszár, Sámuel Lányi and Pál Vásárhelyi for the rivers Danube, Tisza and Körös, the plans for making the Lower Danube section navigable and the antiinundation work of the Tisza-valley. 132.
