Pál Hüttl Preliminary Announcments And Brief Summary Of Content To The 14th Year-Book Of Transport Museum The doors of the Transport Museum have been opened for the public in 1899 following its establishment in 1896. The collection of the Museum was significant already by the time of the opening, but it increased steadily during the years. The Museum was very popular and frequented. The 2nd World War caused the building and the collections significant demages. After eliminating the war demages the Museum opened its doors to the visitors in a new organizational form again on the 2nd April 1966. As a result of the reorganization of the researches and elaborations in connection with traffic history the number of the scientific collections grew continuously. This made necessary in the 1970s and 1980s the expansion of the central building by a new wing, the arrangement of the story part of the Petőfi Hall to accomodate the aeronautical permanent exhibition and the establishment of the store basis, the archives and the restorer workshop in the Tatai street. The professional thoroughness and the high-level aesthetic representation of the permanent exhibitions and the temporary exhibitions organized in a growing number lured hundered thousands of visitors into the Museum. About these results report the yearbooks issued 2-3 yearly (in 1974, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2001 and 2003) following the first year-book published in 1971. In part I of this year-book dr.András Katona director-general reports on the works carried out by the Transport Museum in 2003 and 2004 and informs about the changes, which took place in the recent years in the world of the museums in our country and abroad. In part II we provide a selection from the history of the Museum's collections. In part III studies concerning transport history and methodology are published. In part IV we render account of the renewal of the famous MÁV fast train steam locomotives being museum pieces and of the birth of the passenger car Puli (sheep-dog). Parti Introduction Dr.András Katona: The Activity Of The Transport Museum In The Years Of 2003-2004. In the introduction of his summary, referring to the wide public interest, the Director-general expresses the need of publishing the year-book at least two yearly. At present that is the only writing, which contains research results and publications concerning the traffic branch. The Transport Museum - as the only institution in the country dealing with traffic history researches has kept with undiminished energy its strong position during the 100 years since its opening in 1899, adapting its organization, staff, research and exhibition policy to the interest of the public and researchers, independent from the political and social changes. This is verified by the number of visitors exceeding yearly 300 000 and by the several hundered researchers and library visitors. The Director-general gives account furthermore about the changes, which took place in the past 15-20 years in the world of the museums at home and abroad. He demonstrates the challenges, new tasks and expectations, to which everybody in the Museum - including even the directors and every employee - has to come up. The museums became cultural centres and to solve successfully this task, co-workers dealing with public information, communication, marketing and public relation have to be included in the activi303
