PÁL HÜTTL Preliminary Announcements And Brief Summary Of Content To The 12th Year-Book Of The Transport Museum The first year-book of the Transport Museum has been published in 1971 in honour of the 75th anniversary of establishment of the Museum. Dr. György Csanádi, member of the Academy, Minister for Transport and Posts wrote in the preface as follows: "The first Year-Book of the Museum received by the readers in the year of the 75th anniversary is a visiting card. It is the visiting card of a national institution, which preservs the valuable traditions of the past three-quarters of the century, but which is much more, than the old Museum." Dr. János Fónagy Minister for Transport and Water Management wrote: "It is a honor for me that in the preface of the 12th year-book of the Transport Museum celebrating in 1999 the lOOst anniversary of its opening I may great the managers and employees of the institution and have the opportunity to express my appreciation for the activity of the renowned Museum. The research documents - the latest results of which are published in the year-book - demonstrate a wide range of the transport history"... The importance of the activities is emphasized even more by the fact that the thorough and objective demonstration of the past is an indispensable factor of the society based on knowledge. The year-book is of abiding value even in this respect." The publishing of the 12th year-book has an extraordinary value. Following its establishment in 1896 the Transport Museum opened its doors for the public in 1899. The Museum celebrated its active functioning in 1999. The collection of the Museum was significant already at the time of the opening and it increased further during the years. The Museum enjoyed a great popularity and had a large number of visitors. World War II caused significant demages to both the collections and the building. After elimination of the war demages the Museum has opened its doors again in a new organizational form on the 2nd April, 1966. As a result of the zeal and calling of the employees of the Museum, and furthermore of the reorganization of the research and elaboration activities concerning the transport history the number of collections continued to increase. That made necessary in the 1970s and 1980s the extention of the central building by a new wing, the construction of the floor part of the Petőfi-Hali to accomodate the permanent exhibition of aeronautics and the establishment of a new store basis. The professional thorougness and the high grade aesthetical appearance of the permenent exhibitions and the periodical exhibitions organised in an increasing number brought hundred thousands of visitors into the Museum. About all these results report the year-books published two-three yearly (1974, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1996, 1999) following the first one published in 1971. In part I of this year-book dr. András Katona Director-General reports on the activities of the Transport Museum in the years 1999-2000. In part II we provide a selection of the history of the collections of the Museum. In part III we publish papers concerning transport history and methodology. 374
