irregular form and uneven surface. A largo petalled flower hough with a thin s 1 a I k stretches upwards with huge leaves. The flowers are shaded in whitish grey. The hush growing on the side of the rock produces ihe effect of autumn with its rust-colored leaves and small berries. The mantis on the stalk is drawn in detail with thin lines and shades. Al the loot of ihe rock daisies and grasses are drawn either in pale or dark colors. The inscription reads: "Ihe Hermit of Lake Mandarin Ducks ('hang I Isimig painled. Along with it is a seal: "Chang llsiuiig ssu yin". At the center of the fourth painting (fig. 9) stands a Lwisted cemhra pine, the symbol of winter. Its trunk stretches vigorously lo ihe right, starting with an irregular, soft, knotty contour and dry brush strokes textured with black dots representing ils oldness. One branch with two cones twists upwards to ihe left, laden with bushy needles painled resolutely. Immediately beside the trunk we can view another symbol of winter, a drooping winterplum bough which fills (he middle ground. A colored butterfly on the flower would not fit into ihe winter landscape if we don't suggest il as a présager of ihe approaching spring. The narcissus with sharply drawn long leases also gives us an impression of ils obtrusion In the composition. The painting is dated and inscripted: "Painled by Tzu-hsiang Chang Hsiung in the first part of winter in the year chi-wci (1859)."' Inder it is a seal of him: "Tzu-hsiang shu-hua".
