HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Cseh, Éva: Some Early Imari Porcelains
Fig. 2. Jar, Imari, end of XVII th centuryglaze, the impurity of the cobalt and the style of decoration (similar in form and style to the one on page 345. in "Old Imari") for basis we can date our piece to the end of 17 th century. The other jar 6 is similar in form and character but its glaze and cobalt are entirely different from the above mentioned one (Fig. 3.). The decoration is under-glaze blue, above-glaze red and gold enamels. Its cobalt has a violet shade, it is stained and quite black in some places. The red is a bit pale, the gold has worn off in many places. The colour of the glaze is greyish blue full of very small bubbles. Characteristically of this type the ornaments on the surface are divided into two main parts. There are two motifs in semicircles on the shoulder of the jar: in one of them we find stylized flowers and claspers, in the other a red peonia with white bud in a blue background can be seen. The body of the jar is divided into three fields separated by wide cobalt stripes. Their ornaments are: 1. a peonia-bouquet growing out of a rock, 2. a chrysantemum-bouquet branching out behind a fence, 3. branches of a pomegranate tree. The motifs were drawn by energetic lines. There is a same row of motifs on the neck and above the jutting foot: claspers with leaves growing out of a 6 Inv. Nr. 51.224. Height: 17,6 cm. 10 Iparművészeti Múzeum Évkönyve 145
