Here our exhibition of the Japanese Art in the Edo Period 1603—1867 was opened in the beginning of the Month of Museums, on October 4 th (figs. 1—2). One of the reasons for making this exhibition was the centenary of the end of this period (and of the Meiji restoration), and the second was the fact that about 92% of our Japanese collection (around 7000 pieces) are from tins period. The exhibition occupies four rooms and two corridors. Selecting the material, we have tried to represent each branch of art in proportion with the others, making one exception, in the case of bronzes, seeing that both in Japan and abroad, lately there is a growing interest for this art. The selection of a total of 435 objects was built up in the following way : paintings 15, woodblock-prints 15, books with woodblock-illustrations 4, statues 5, swords and sword-blades 10, tsubas 34, other sword-fittings 23, helmets 2, iron fans for warriors 2, lacquers 23, wooden objects, partly lacquered 17, inros 33, combs, hairpins and mirrors 10, bronzes 36, cloisonnés 13, ceramics 40, porcelain 32, silk patterns 2, bamboo-baskets 5, other items 11. The material was selected by Éva Cseh and Tibor Horváth. The arrangement was carried out by László Ferenczy and Éva Cseh, with the technical assistance of Gábor Szabó. Everyone in the museum was helping them. This exhibition was scheduled to be open for fifteen months.
