HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Huszár, Flórián: Three Wood-cuts from the Time of Boxer Rising

Fig. 3. reason to use a pseudonym. Among the three cuts there is only one which contains Hongkong Newspaper "pseudo-editor". It is that one, on which the inscription I-min ch'u tui is to be read. We can't consider this inscription otherwise than an indication to boxers (I-ho-t'uan) and this is in conformity with the historical reality. Really, the boxers participated very actively in the siege of settlement. If the representation of Tung Fu-hsiang could have incurred the revenge of authorities, the representation of boxers could have been more dangerous to the artist. On the other two cuts the boxers are not represented, w r e miss the inscription of "pseudo-editor". But here the artist wants also to be anonymous. The people's movement couldn't exist on South. The Chinese local feudal landlords joined forces with the foreign imperialists to maintain the "order". It's worth to mention that few days after the wardeclaration of the Ch'ing court, the 26 th of June, in Sanghai "mutual defense" agreements were signed by the South China feudal landlords and the representatives of foreign powers. It was declared, that everyone would be persecuted who took part in the people's movement moreover that one who spread propaganda on them. It's probable, that the reason of the master to keep his name in secret was that he yielded to the pressure of these circumstances. The court dismissed Tung Fu-hsiang the 3 rd December 1900 influenced by the pressure of foreign powers. 9 9 Chu Shou-p'eng: Tung-hau Hsü-lu, Kuang-hsü ch'ao, ch. 163. p. 3.
