HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Vera: Maurya Mother Goddess Figurines

Fig. 6. Figure of a woman of representation of the Mother Goddess of the Indus Culture. The only facts, known about the site and conditions of discovery of the figurine of reliable provenance, excavated in Sari Dheri are as follows: the lower stratas contain only a few Mohenjo-daro, Harappa and Chanhu-daro statues of close affinity; a unique type of Mother Goddess, called "Mother Goddess of Sari Dheri" was found and there were many figurines of Maurya provenance, while the discoveries in the upper stratas are of hellenistic nature. 17 By analyzing the figurines of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts, in our opinion, relations may exist between the figurines of the Indus Culture and the Mother Goddess of the Maurya epoch, due to the similarity between the types of jew T els and the ornamental details. In this case, the existence of typologie continuity must be present, its solution, however, belongs to problems of survival-revival. 17 B. Rowland, op. cit.
