-4 Fig. 6- S. Höre, The Birth of the White Rose, etching The earnestness of the mode of expression fully subordinated to the message is enhanced by the contrast of the dark colours and the white. Size : 54 X 52 cm. Husain, M. T. (born 1916) painter, a very significant artist of the XXth century Indian painting. The chief characteristic of his pictures are, from the very beginning of his career, the constructivity subordinated to expressing manifestation and at the same time the resemblance of vision. In his oil-painting "Black and white divided by three" (Fig. 7.) on canvas, the back- ground is divided into yellowish black and white plane, there coloured masks placed before it. In the simplified, schematic draft of the masks the respective parts are filled in by strong local colours: red, green, yellow, blue, etc. The expressive delineation of the masks is a confession, but we can not know whether it refers to the artist's own life, to his fate, his inner world — or perhaps it is a symbol.
