HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Reports on the Activities of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts in 1965-1966

Fig. 4. A Balinese painted calendar (palelintangan). Painted on canvas in many colours. 45x50 cm. Vol. IX. of the Francis Hopp Museum's Yearbooks (1966) contains (pp. 183-186) the presentation, in a descriptive form, of a Balinese painted calendar, a so-called palelintangan. (Inventory number: 53.212. I.) At that time the above Museum purchased an other piece of art of the same kind. This new acquisition is in quite good condition. (Inventory number: 66.4.) In regard of the division of its partitions and of the general contents of the pictures it is identical with those of the previously described one, in some details, however, there are several dissimilarities. The new piece is of a smaller size, 45 X 50 cm. It is painted on a specially prepared canvas or linen of a finer sort than that of the former one. Its finish too is more minute, more careful and also the pictures are more finely wrought in their details. The scenes represented in the pictures are in several places to some extent dissimilar to those of the already described piece. For instance in the 7 th part of the 2nd row from above, besides *the head of the demon there is to be seen a human figure too. Anyhow, this minuteness is a general feature of the whole palelintangan, although here the partitions are separated merely by a plain dark line. The stripes containing inscriptions suggest a certain effect of modern art. As for the colouring, again the minuteness is to be stressed, because the colours of the present piece are finer, more shaded off, than those of the other piece. The shading may be, however, due to some extent to time too. Gy.K.
