HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Reports on the Activities of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts in 1965-1966

1966 After the renovation of our buildings in the previous years, 196G meant for us a return to settled conditions. Now having once more time for such occupations, we rearranged the Departmental Collections kept in the depot, completed the registration of this material and also gave more attention to our exhibitions. This latter was begun with a joint undertaking with the Museum of Applied Art, to display our ivory carvings collection. This venture was experimental in tw r o points, first, it was originally a one-day, or a Sunday exhibition (on March 15 th ) to be reopened on the next Sunday, and seeing the interest for it, it was reopened for the second time for a two week period; second, displaying side by side the European and Asiatic ivory carvings pro vi ded an opportunity for a survey of technical variations and carving styles. From our part, we participated in this exhibition with 67 pieces, with the majority of Chinese and Japanese carvings. The material was selected by Vera Horváth, Péter Polonyi and Éva Cseh, the exhibition was arranged by László Ferenczy and Tibor Horváth. The latter was also the author of a short catalogue. In the China Museum we exhibited again, rearranged and completed The Art of Old and New China, which was opened on July 6 th . In the series of five rooms, the material follows the historical sequence, while in the central hall we found the proper place for larger sized Buddhist statues. A good part of our new 7 acquisitions were displayed for the first time in this exhibition, which was prepared and arranged by the collective effort of the staff. The third exhibition was put up in the Museum of Local History at Pápa. This museum occupies a part of a baroque palace and the luxurious interior provided a special atmosphere for the exhibition of Eastern Asiatic bronzes and wood-block prints. This time also, we tried to show which are the common traits of every Eastern Asiatic country and also the national characteristics. In the large room lent to us, we could exhibit 176 objects. The material was selected by László Ferenczy, Flórián Huszár and Péter Polonyi, in displaying, László Ferenczy was assisted by Flórian Huszár. The exhibition was opened in the "Month of Museums", on October 8 th by Tibor Horváth and László Varga, the vice-president of the municipal-council of Pápa.
