HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Polonyi, Péter: Some Inside-Painted Chinese Snuff Bottles
alive and working, the writing down and publication 30 of their recollections would provide a substantial contribution to the elucidation of still obscure questions. 40 * After I had written my article we received the No. I. and No. 2. of magazine „Chinese Snuff-Bottles" (A Magazine for the collector and student of Chinese SnuffBottles). In these there is published an interesting article „How to Buy Interiorpainted Snuff-bottles". Part I., Part II. by the editor Hugh M. Moss. But we can't agree with statements of his article about so-called early group of insidepainted snuffbottles (1800—1885), until he proves this partly unsigned group being really originated from before 1885. In lack of materials we must wait for the appearing of the promised catalogue in order to discuss this question. Moss mentiones two interesting pieces dated from 1876, and 1879. If these are not forgeries, then they are the earliest buttles. Moss Ibid. No. 1. p. 32 fig. 5 the ,,Liu hsiu tsai" of YungShou-t'ien (Yung Shao-t'ien is erroneous) is an excellent analogy to our No. 50.408 piece. The signature Shou-pen mentioned by László Ferenczy according to Moss's article, p. 41. must that of Liu Shou-pen. Our piece from Meng Tzu-shou (Meng Tzu-shao is erroneous) No. 3268 in artistic style is very like to the piece from Alex S. Cussons's Collection (Chinese Snuff-Bottles. No. 1. p. 26. fig. 11.) 39 Yeh Peng-chih's article is not an excellent example of such work as the record of Liu Chih-tu on the recollections of the Peking red lacquer cutter Hu Tsen-jui, published in 1960 in the 2nd issue of „Gugong Bowuyuan Yuankan" (pp. 146 — 147.). 4U I have found some of the necessary books of reference in public libraries of Budapest and got acquainted with the contents of others through available works. Unfortunately it was precisely the article of the Hungarian-born Mathias Komor „Chinese Snuff Bottles" (China Journal 23/6 Dec. 1935) which I failed to read or to get acquainted with its contents.
