HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Two Japanese Lacquer Boxes of the Early 18th Century

There is possibly a relation between this new lacquer style of Chinese character and the Nanga style of painting. At the same time, the simplification of pattern, the preference of a single motif that does not cover the full ground, and the use of a frame are reminiscent of the special lacquer art of Ogawa Ritsuö (1663—1747). 7 There is much value in the lacquer art of the early 18th century which is sometimes belittled by the friends of more lavishly decorated lacquer wares as the thirty years of decline that followed the Genroku period. 7 The paper-box (ryoski-bako ) with an owl sitting on an oak branch on the cover has been often published from the collection of Tsugaru Yoshitaka.
