HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Tóth, Edit: Terracottas from the Gupta Period
Fig. 7. Man with an unidentified headdress tation of the somewhat crooked nose and slanting mouth lend character to the piece. The face and headdress suggest that the person portrayed was of foreign orign and as such it is close to type 21 of group 8 (of Agrawala). 9 Height: 3,5 cm. Figure 8: also of this group. It depicts an elderly woman with a cap-like headdress the two sides of which fit low over the forehead. The topis slightly tilted and forms a round, vertically placed disc. Her hair is not visible and the ear lobes are long. Her face is round and plump; the nose, although worn away, had to be unusually short. The distance between the mouth and nose is great, and she has a small, double cleft chin. The evelids are fully and distinctly modelled and rather characteristic of the Kus'an period than the Gupta. Height: 3,5 cm. Figure 9 : This is the head of an elderly man wrapped in a turban wound to give the appearance of two separate pieces and tied diagonally. He has a prominent forehead, deep-set eyes, a short, small nose, mustache and a beard which is parted in the middle. It is from Mathura and is lighter, more yellowish and with many bits of white quartz. The small head, only 3,5 cm high, has its own special character, yet it also reflects the tiredness and haggardness of an old face. Its style differs from the rest: the features are sharper, 9 Agrawala, V. S. : Terracotta figurines, p. 155.
