(fig. 1). The hair is arranged in symmetrical rays around the top of his head and along the sides. This style with curled locks, the alakâvalï, was a favourite style of the Gupta period and Kälidäsa even mentions it. 3 There is a heavy earring in the left ear. Contrary to the fragmentary right profile and the wear of the face, the prominent nose, satisfied smile on the thick-lipped mouth make this face quite expressive.
