HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Four Archaic Chinese Jade Carwings

Fig. 4/a — b. Dancing Girl, jade. Nassing States The length of the knot-opener is 21.6 em, rather large for its kind. It is broken into two parts, just above the comma-shaped ornamentation. Its style is representative of the Shang-Yin period and it was made either in this or the Shang-Yin — Early Chou period of transition. //. T ív o h u man figures A. Dancing Girl (figure 4). Originally the major colour had to be light green, with a greyish-black tint from the waist down. The surface of this hard jade is shiny. In the grave, the original light colour changed to greyishbrown with almost reddish spots in places. It is 8 cm. high, 3.1 cm. wide and 0.5 cm. thick. The jade carver used the two sides of the plate to give a frontal and a back view of the figure. The dancing girl raises her right hand above her head, and keeps the left hand before the stomach. Her hair is shoulder length and in the back is combed high on the head and braided. The face appears to be round although somewhat wide under the temples. Her dress reaches the ground and the wide sleeves fall back at the wrist to reveal the sleeves of her undergarments which are decorated, with parallel engraved lines at the cuffs.
