ON THE DATE OF INSTITUTION OF THE MILITARY ORDER OF MARIA THERESA There are publications that specify the date of institution of the Military Order of Maria Theresa, the first military order of merit of the Habsburg Empire, as 13 May 1757, instead of 18 June 1757, the day of the well-known battle of Kolin during the Seven Years War. The author reveals the origins of the false belief. The establishment of the Order had been delayed several times since 1749. (A number of projects are introduced by the author.) The new war necessitated the institution of the Order, which was planned to be declared in Vienna on 13 May 1757, the birthday of the Queen, Maria Theresa. The announcement was expected to be made to the troops by Prince Charles of Lorraine. The statement of the institution, however, was cancelled. This fact is not usually explained by the special literature dealing with orders and medals. An obvious reason for the failure of the announcement was that the Habsburg army was severely defeated by the forces of Prussian King Frederick II and his allies on 6 May near Prague, in Bohemia. A part of the defeated troops, commanded by Prince Charles of Lorraine, escaped to Prague, where they were surrounded by Frederick II, and faced the threat of being starved into surrender. It was also to be feared that the Prussian forces would march against Vienna. This critical situation led to the cancellation of the declaration of the establishment of the Order. Thus, the victory under the command of Field Marshal Count Leopold Daun on 18 June 1757 at Kolin was life-saving for the reign of Maria Theresa, and served as an outstanding opportunity to the ceremonious institution of the Military Order of Maria Theresa, which became a legendary order of merit later on. Mai 1757 als den Gründungstag der ältesten militärischen Ehrenzeichnung des Habsburgreiches, des MilitärMaria Theresien-Ordens angeben, anstelle des korrekten Tages, den 18. Juni 1757, den Tag der berühmten Schlacht des Siebenjährigen Krieges in Kolin. Wir möchten die Ursachen dieser falschen Information erklären. Der Orden wollte schon seit 1749 gegründet werden. (Wir stellen mehrere Vorhaben in Kurzform dar). Der neue Krieg machte die Gründung des Ordens notwendig. Ursprünglich plante man die Gründungserklärung am 13. Mai 1757. in Wien zu veröffentlichen. Der Tag war der Geburtstag der Königin Maria Theresia. Prinz Karl von Lothringen erhielt die Aufgabe, das Ereignis bei dem Heer einzumelden. Die Einmeldung der Ordensgründung fiel aber aus. Die Fachliteratour, die sich mit Auszeichnungen befasst, erklärt diese Tatsache meistens nicht.
