BEATRIX BASICS: THE NEW REPRESENTATIONS OF LAJOS BATTHYÁNY SUMMARY The representations of Lajos Batthyány has been collected lately in an iconographie publication. Still several important new works were displayed last year at the exhibition of the Batthyány memorial year — some of them hidden in public collections, others found in private ones. An unknown piece is the ivory miniature of Ágoston Medvey (1814—1870) resembling to the type of the 1848 lithograph of Antal Stadler (1823—1872), a Kolozsvár bom painter. A water-colour in a private collection that has been found lately is of the same type. The full length painting of Miklós Barabás (1810—1898) finished in 1847 became an object of the cult and having been destroyed and later copied by the painter himself a bust size version of it was also first displayed at the memorial exhibition. A series of graphic variations were published in different periodicals in the year 1849. Another important unknown work is the water-colour of Joseph Martignoni (1803—1 873) dated to 1849. Statues were rare: that of Károly Alexy (1823—1880) from 1855 is a version of the plaster bust made in 1849 destroyed later. The full length standing version of 1866 was considered to be the model for a never finished memorial. These new contributions to the iconography of the first Hungarian president prove that the already known representations are a group of works ever to be widened as a result of special occassions.
