Tanulmányok Budapest Múltjából XXX. Krisztina Keresztély The Suburbs in Paris and in Budapest 1850-1950 Budapest and Paris, though they both had their own stages of development and function, had parallel ways concerning the status of their suburbs. Similarities were started by the formation of power-policy exerting influence on the city in the middle of the 19 th century, facilitating solely the development of the territory of the administrative city. Centralist developmental policy was accompanied by uneven development of the suburbs that became a problem of urban-policy by the beginning of the 20 th century. Contradictions stemming from the status of the suburbs appeared first of all as an administrational problem in Budapest, whereas in Paris they were manifested as social and urban-developmental tasks. After the debates and experiments of the 1910s and 1920s, in the 1930s years all-comprehensive resolutions were made in both cities: the first all-in developmental plans were born that approached the city and the suburbs as equal territories-concerning urban planning. The similarities of development of urban policies of the two cities came to an end in the 1950s , when in Budapest the suburbs were united with the capital by means of power-political resolutions. 48
