FINDS FROM THE FRANCISCAN CHURCH OF BUDA CASTLE There was an opportunity to conduct a very limited archaeological excavation going along with the reconstruction of Castle Theatre at 1-3 Színház Street. Historical research has located the mediaeval Franciscan Church and Friary in Buda Castle dedicated to St. John the Evangelist on this site. On the basis of secondary sources the construction of the building complex can be dated to the 1260s. The excavations were limited to the nave of the church, because the choir had been demolished in the course of the building of the trap of the theatre. The details of the walls of the one-nave mediaeval church have been investigated and on the northern wall outer and inner buttresses were discovered. Within the church there was a 100-150 cms thick homogeneous, disturbed debris layer. The mediaeval architectural elements and tombstones published in the present catalogue were found in this infilment. 21
